Purpose

Build and develop leg riding mechanics for use during sparring.

Description

Training Partner Starting Position. The assisting will start lying on their back with their legs bent and their feet flat on the floor.  The hands should be in the Home Alone position.

Practicing Student. The practicing student will start in a modified Side Control with both arms over the assisting student’s body.  The practicing student will then move into a modified Watching TV position by lifting the hand closest to the assistings student’s hip and turning their chest towards the assisting student’s legs. The legs should then be repositioned so that the outside leg is posted, flat on the foot, away from the bodies.  The arm closest to the assisting student’s head should stay on the floor and base on the forearm.  The unposted arm will make a grip on the outside of the assisting student’s far knee.

To execute the drill, the practicing student will pull in on the far knee, collapsing both legs together and pinning them to the ground.  Then using the arm over the body and the outside posted foot the practicing student will elevate their body as they do in the Technical Stand Up.  After lifting their hips off the ground, the practicing student will use their bottom leg and lead with the knee over the assisting student’s top knee (that is trapped by being pulled and pinned to the floor).  After the practicing student’s knee is placed over the assisting student’s knee the practicing student will push off the posted hand and foot to slide over the top of the assisting student's legs, progressing until they are completely on the other side of the assisting student.

The ending position is not in Side Control, but rather on the outside of the assisting student’s legs.  Some student’s will try to jump directly to Side Control but this will expose their back during the transition.

After landing on the outside of the legs the practicing student will immediately take their outside arm and place it over the body, and switch their hips into the Watching TV position with their chest facing the legs.  This should leave the practicing student in the starting position again and the movement to be turned into a drill.

Common Mistakes

  • Some student’s will attempt to leave their forearm on the floor during the elevation step of the movement.  This will expose their back during the transition.  Make sure the practicing student is striving for maximum elevation and sliding over the legs with posture.

  • Make sure the student is sliding over the legs and not the hips.  This movement is about dominating and riding the legs.  This move will be performed slightly differently while rolling but the transfer learning will be valuable.

  • Some students will attempt to use their top knee after elevating rather than the bottom knee.  This is a totally different movement (one that we practice).  Make sure the student is using the correct knee for the drill.
