Purpose

Build and develop leg riding mechanics for sparring.

Description

Training Partner Starting Position. The assisting student will start lying on their back with their legs bent and their feet flat on the floor.  The hands should be in the Home Alone position.

Practicing Student. The practicing student will start in Reverse Kesa Gatame  by sitting in the Watching TV position with one arm over the assisting student’s body.  The arm should be flat on the forearm with the outside foot posted as a base.  The practicing student will then use their non posted arm and grab on the outside of the assisting student’s far knee.  The grip on the knee will then be pulled towards the floor, trapping and pinning both knees.

To start the drill the practicing student will elevate their body by pushing off the posted foot and hand.  The practicing student should make sure to raise off of their forearm onto their hand to get maximum elevation.  Next the practicing student will transfer all of their weight onto their hands (The hand on the floor and the hand on the assisting student’s knee).  This will allow the practicing student to remove the posted foot from the floor and place it at the crook of the assisting student’s top knee.  After placing the knee the practicing student will apply weight to their shin, and then rotate their knee towards the floor.  Simultaneously the student will push off the hand that is posted on the floor and execute a Back Step by rotating the non pinning leg 270 degrees to the outside of the assisting student’s legs.It is important for the practicing student to realize this is a leg riding technique and will leave them on the outside of the legs not in Side Control.  When the transition over the legs is completed the practicing student will need to adjust their position back to the Reverse Kesa Gatame position to make this a drill.

Common Mistakes

  • Make sure the practicing student is getting maximum elevation by elevating off of the forearm onto the hand, otherwise their back will be exposed.

  • When dropping the knee into the knee pit of the assisting student, they will need to push off of the posted hand towards the legs.  This will progress the practicing student to the outside of the legs and away from the Side Control.

  • Make sure the practicing student is using the top knee and not the bottom knee. The bottom knee, while a viable movement, is a different movement that we practice.
