Student Objectives:
The student will develop essential skills for taking the back through using the Hook Replacement technique.
The Student will build an understanding for Hooks while on the back.
Teaching Cues:
Thumbs Down
Open The door
Step Over
Crack the Egg
Roll
Lesson: Hook Replacement
The assisting student will start in the Turtle Position but allow some space for the practicing student to perform the technique.
The practicing student will start on their knees with their chest facing the assisting student’s head. The practicing student will then hold up the arm that is closest to the belt and make a thumbs down. Once they have a thumbs down they can open the hand and place the hand along the inside of the thigh, on the far leg, of the assisting student. They will then pry open the leg slightly using the “open the door” cue.
Once the practicing student opens the thigh, they will then step their own ankle over top of their hand. Encourage the student to leave the hand in until the foot replaces the hand. Once the foot has been placed as a hook the hand will be moved to the closest forearm. Now that the far side of the body has been controlled, the practicing student will elevate their hips and place the knee of the non-hooking leg into the space near the ribs and belt. Simultaneously the practicing student will pull with the hook and the arm along the forearm. This will create a lot of rotational power and break the turtle down. Once the child has rolled over the second hook will be set.
Possible Extensions:
Combine with the Bridge Out before the Hook Replacement.
Combine with the Duck Under
Combine with the Rear Naked Choke
Possible Refinements:
Make sure students step directly over their own hand. This makes it easy to know exactly where the hook goes without having to visually see the space.
Encourage students to build momentum by posting on the free hand during the Egg Cracking cue.
Give extra feedback on how to build rotational force by pulling with the Shell Grip while Cracking the egg (this is different than the momentum to pull them over).
